เป็นสัตว์ทะเลขนาดเล็กที่อยู่รวมกันเป็นกลุ่ม ในกลุ่มเฮมิคอร์ดาตา มีตั้งแต่ยุคแคมเบรียน (Cambrian preriod) แต่แพร่กระจายมากที่สุดในยุคไซลูเรียน (Silurian period) จากนั้นเริ่มลดปริมาณลง จนสูญพันธุ์หมดในยุคเพอร์เมียน (Permian period) นอกจากนี้ แต่ละยุคจนจบออกไปมีรูปร่างแตกต่างกันไป หลากหลายสายพันธุ์ ในจังหวัดสตูล พบแกรปโตไลต์ บอกอายุหินในช่วงยุคไซลูเรียนถึงยุคดีโวเนียน  หมวดหินวังตงแทน
